Rules for garages in Durham

Under the Ontario Building Code, an accessory building larger than 10 square metres needs a building permit. Each municipality also sets its own limits for accessory buildings in its zoning by-law: maximum height, floor area, lot coverage and distance from the lot lines. Ontario now allows an additional residential unit in an accessory building on many lots, but the size and servicing rules differ from Oshawa to Uxbridge, so we check them before design.

Do I need a permit for a garage in Durham Region?
