Hillside garages on Cameron Lake
Many Cameron Lake cottages sit on a slope above the water, with little flat land for parking. A garage built into the hill solves that: the bays open at the lower level behind a stone-faced retaining wall, and the roof becomes a floor for a guest room and deck at the upper level.
From the deck, guests look over the treetops to the lake, while their cars stay out of sight below.

Building into a hill
A garage set into a slope holds back soil and water, so the walls are engineered, waterproofed and drained. Access for concrete trucks and equipment on a hill takes planning. Permits come from the City of Kawartha Lakes, and Cameron Lake is part of the Trent–Severn Waterway, with Kawartha Conservation regulating some lots.

Rain runs downhill toward the building and the lake. We plan grading, drains and eavestroughs so water is carried away from the walls and does not wash soil into the lake.

A hillside garage changes how people move around the lot. We plan safe steps from the parking area to the cottage and the guest room, with handrails and lighting, so getting around is easy in the dark and in the rain.

Who uses the room above
On Cameron Lake, the room over a hillside garage is often given to grandparents or the oldest kids, who like a little distance from the noise of the main cottage. A small washroom, a bar fridge and a coffee station make it a real retreat, and a separate path keeps late arrivals from waking anyone in the cottage.

Parking and turning at the top
On a steep Cameron Lake lot, the garage is often the only level ground near the road. We plan room to turn a vehicle or a trailer, a spot for snow to go when the lane is ploughed, and a short, safe walk from the garage door to the path down to the cottage.
