Rules for coach houses in Newcastle
Newcastle is part of Clarington. An apartment above a garage is an additional residential unit, so it must meet the Municipality's size, setback and parking rules. The Building Code requires fire separation from the garage, a safe exit, heating and water and sewer service. Some lots near creeks fall under the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority.

When someone lives above a garage, noise from car doors, engines and the garage door opener travels up. We insulate the floor between the bays and the apartment for sound as well as fire, and place the bedroom away from the overhead door so the tenant or family member sleeps well.
