Renovations for Kawartha Lakes homes and cottages

Kawartha Lakes is one large municipality with very different houses inside it: brick Victorians in Lindsay, older homes in the villages of Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls, farmhouses on country roads, and cottages along the lakes and rivers.

Many owners here are not starting from scratch. They have a house or cottage they love in the right spot, and they want it to work better: a new layout, better insulation and windows, updated systems, or a cottage made comfortable through the winter.

What renovating in Kawartha Lakes involves

Building permits are issued by the City of Kawartha Lakes. Outside the towns, many properties use a private well and septic system, and a renovation that adds bedrooms or bathrooms can affect the septic, so we check it early. Waterfront properties may also have shoreline or conservation reviews.

QUESTIONSKAWARTHA LAKES, ON

Frequently asked questions

Can't find your answer? Tell us about your project and ask us directly.

Can you make our cottage usable year-round?

Often, yes. It usually means work on insulation, windows, heating, water lines and sometimes the foundation. We look at the cottage first to see what it needs.

Who issues building permits in Kawartha Lakes?

The City of Kawartha Lakes issues building permits across the municipality, including Lindsay, Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls.

Will a renovation affect our septic system?

It can, especially if you add bedrooms or bathrooms. We check the existing system early so the plan accounts for it.
