A custom family home on open country land in Cavan.
This home sits on a wide-open rural lot in Cavan. The design is simple and strong: dark board-and-batten siding, heavy timber trusses at the gables, and a long covered porch across the back that looks out over the fields.
It's a custom family home built for country living, with the rooms families tell us they wish they'd added.
With open fields on every side, the house was planned to take in the view. A long covered porch runs across the back, with timber posts and beams, so there's a sheltered place outside to look out over the land.
We photographed it in the snow, right after we finished it.
The outside keeps to a few strong materials: dark board-and-batten siding and heavy timber trusses at the gables.
At the front entry, the timber trusses frame a wood front door, with windows on either side.
The main floor is open from the kitchen to the great room. The great room has a vaulted ceiling, a stone fireplace and big gable windows.
The tall windows bring in the light and look straight out to the fields.
The kitchen has a large island with seating along one side, set in the open space between the great room and the stairs.
An oak staircase with black metal spindles leads to the finished lower level, which has polished concrete floors and a wood-ceiling rec room.
A wood range hood and open shelving warm up the white cabinetry.
The wood tones tie the kitchen to the timber outside and the floors underfoot.
The home was built with the rooms families tell us they wish they'd added: a real office, a mudroom, and space downstairs for the kids.
In the bedroom, black-framed windows look out to the open land.
